The mission of The Lillian Education Foundation is to fuel the academic achievement of at-risk students throughout the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area.
The vision of The Lillian Education Foundation is to champion the legacy of Lillian D. Trotter through becoming a charity of choice for providing scholarships and other educational resources for college-bound students.
The Lillian Education Foundation was founded in the name of Lillian D. Trotter, an inspiring matriarch, who throughout her 80-plus years of life on this earth, has encouraged all children to further their academic pursuits and stretch to meet their individual goals.
Mrs. Trotter is the mother of Len Trotter Gatewood, for whom our scholarship is named. Ms. Gatewood spent her entire career serving as a public school educator in Fairfax County Public Schools, dedicating her life to helping students fulfil their dreams, the dreams of their families and the potential of their communities.
In 1997, upon the death of Len Trotter Gatewood, the founders of The Lillian Education Foundation created "The Len Trotter Gatewood Memorial Scholarship." Each year since 1998, our foundation has awarded scholarships ranging from $250 - $1,500 to area students who submitted the best applications consisting of an essay, a teacher recommendation, their grades & their activities as judged by an impartial scholarship committee.
